Genre Decision Blog

Movie genres | Spin The Wheel App

Our group decided to choose the horror genre for multiple reasons. First of all, we have never produced a film of that genre before, which makes us curious and excited to see how the process goes. In addition, this genre will help us learn more techniques of filming. To be more precise, the movements and angles of that genre are much more different from the ones my group and I have previously done. That said, this will impact and expand our knowledge for this class. My group members and I were also hesitating between that genre and the comedy genre as well as the action genre. However, we came to the conclusion that the comedy genre would have to involve more dialogue and acting skills, which we do not have. For that reason, it was preferable not to choose it although it would have been an interesting experience. Moreover, we ended up not choosing the action genre due to the fact that it would involve a much more complex storyline. Because we did not have much creativity and ideas, we decided that the horror genre would be more suitable. Horror movies required less actors than comedy movies. They also required less location changes in comparison to action films. This best fits the schedule we have for filming since we would prefer to get the movie done in as few days as possible. Too many location changes would draw out the filming process and cause us to rush editing. Aside from being a genre we’ve never done, horror films also caught everyone's interest. We feel as though it’s the best option for our pitch, which is, “A group of teenage girls have a sleepover only to find out that one of them will be the death of the rest.” It would be seemingly hard to turn this pitch into a comedy movie. While action was plausible it yet again would take to much time. The underlying suspense of this pitch also shows that it would better fit the horror genre.
